By popular request, Here's a startup for all those 660AV owners out there...
Similar in style to the 840 one, Different camera angle, different surfaces.
It's 16" size - I figured that it's not hard to resize it for 13" screens.
Due to a technical hitch, it's not anti-aliased, but still looks good!
Hope you like it!

Subject: [*] CDF
This is an application (Freeware) that I wrote to calculate
percentiles of the cumulative normal distribution. It is
small (about 40K on disk, about 100K RAM) and easy to use.
It was written because I was dissatisfied with the CDF tables
which only showed 4 decimal places and only went up to
Z-Values of 3. This goes up to 5, and shows 6 decimal
places.
Enjoy!

Subject: [*] comm - Anarchie 1.1.1
Anarchie v1.1.1 is an Archie client and anonymous FTP client for
the Mac. It is (IMO) the easiest way for users with MacTCP to
fetch a file with a partially known name or to browse around
the anonymous FTP archives. It includes a menu listing all the
Archie servers, as well as FTP bookmarks for all the popular
Macintosh FTP sites (including around 40 mirrors to Umich
and Info-Mac).
And as an added bonus, its Apple Scriptable and Recordable, and
the scripting allows you to fetch and store files to/from FTP
sites, so you can automate all sorts of routine FTP tasks. If you
have Frontier, it supports Menu Sharing as well (and comes with
a bunch of stuff from Leonard Rosenthol to get you started).
Changes since v1.1.0 are:
Bug fixes:
Dot (.) didn't work in patterns.
Enforce text-mode transfers of directory listings.
Occasionaly the "zone" would be incorrect.
New Features:
Lots of minor UI tweaks
Zoom windows leaves room for disk icons.
Option-(return, double-click, etc) bring up the Get... input window.
Cmd-1,2,3 to set radio buttons in each dialog
Preference to open the Bookmarks List on startup.
Preference to not decode files.
Drop a folder of bookmarks onto Anarchie to open as a bookmark listing.
Bytes/second and time remaining in the FTP progress window.
Escape or cmd-. abort archie searches (and display results).
Added "url" field to AppleScript commands.
Support for "contents of selection" AppleScript command.
Listing host:/path/file* works as expected.
Anarchie requires System 7, MacTCP, and is $10 shareware.
Hope you like it,

CPUSpeedDisplay 1.0.2 for PoewrBooks (by Jeremy Kezer)
CPUSpeedDisplay is a teeny application for notebook Macintoshes (Portable,
PowerBooks, or Duos). It does what it says: it displays the current CPU
speed in Megahertz. I wrote this utility to aid me in developing MyBattery,
which is a shareware battery monitoring utility for PowerBooks. Requires
a notebook Macintosh (Portable, PowerBook or Duo) and System 6.0.8 or later
(System 7 compatible). Freeware.
1.0.2 now displays PowerBook model.

Subject: [*] DeepDischarge 1.0.0
Keywords: POWERBOOK BATTERY DISCHARGE NICAD CHARGER ADAPTER
DeepDischarge 1.0.0 for PowerBooks (by Jeremy Kezer)
DeepDischarge is a utility for any PowerBook that uses a nickel-cadmium (NiCad)
battery. Over time, these batteries are susceptible to a "memory effect",
which can reduce their battery capacity. The memory effect can be cured by
fully discharging the battery before recharging it.
DeepDischarge provides a safe, fast and automatic way to deep discharge your
PowerBook's battery. DeepDischarge automatically bypasses the low battery
warning dialogs, and prevents the "soft" sleep brought on by those dialogs.
Instead, DeepDischarge will run your PowerBook's battery down until the "hard"
hardware shutdown occurs, which is at a lower voltage. This provides the best
discharge possible.
Shareware; $5 registration fee suggested. See enclosed docs for more
information.

Subject: [*] Diffraction 2.02
Diffraction 2.02 Calculates optical diffraction patterns. You specify
the amplitude and phase of each part of the aperture
by drawing it like in a paint program. The program
draws the resulting diffraction pattern in gray scale.
You can then filter the diffraction pattern and
transform it back.
Diffraction now politely quits if color is not available.

Subject: DropQ 1.0 / QuicKeys Utility
<<What is DropQ?>>
DropQ is a little application for QuicKeys. If you use QuicKeys, you
know it is very useful utility. You can execute a complicated
operation with one key stroke. But wait, before execution, you at
first open the file you want to process from your application. Have
you felt that this is a little annoying? I have felt. That is why I
made the DropQ.
Using DropQ is quite easy. When you drag and drop a file (or files)
into DropQ, it automatically launch the application you selected
beforehand, tells the application to open the file you droped, tells
QuicKeys to execute the sequence you selected beforehand, and after
all files are processed, the application and DropQ quits. You can drag
and drop more than one file at one time. All files are opend and
processed one after another. This is the most useful part of DropQ.
For example, to convert many TIFF format pictures to JPEG format
pictures using Adobe Photoshop. DropQ can do virtuaIly any thing. It
is up to your idea.

Subject: [*] mini-recorder-21.hqx
I am sending you a program I wrote. Perhaps it could be inserted it in your
archive in the directory /info-mac/snd/util. For lack of fantasy I called
it "Mini Recorder 2.1".
I hope this name is not in use for some commercial or shareware software: in
such a case let me know and I will change it.
The program itself is 110k plus a demo "Tape" of about 400k; after compression
it takes 264k and after BinHex 356k. If you prefer to save some space you can
keep just the program and discard the demo Tape.
I leave a copy af the same distribution at ftp.dm.unipi.it in
/pub/mac-steffe.
To run this program you will need a Mac with System 7, a fast clock and at
least 68020 + arithmetic coprocessor 68881 and 6Mb of RAM. I use it on my
Powerbook170 with 8Mb of RAM.
Essentially with this program you can record, play, edit by cutting and
pasting,
dub and mix sounds sampled at 8 bit and 22Khz. Up to 8 "Tracks" can be opened
at the same time. Up to 4 "Tracks" can be played together. No length limit for
Tracks.
"Tapes" are files that can group up to 4 Tracks, in a particular AIFF format.
Moreover, there is a Fourier Power Spectrum, some digital filters, and ability
to convert some sound resources.
Please, read the online help before using the program.
Anyway, to use it, briefly: first load a "Tape" ; than select a "Track" and
read the Tape sound in the Track; than edit and/or play and mix. If you have
no Tapes ready, record some sound in a 1-Track-Tape and go on.
It is not difficult to record some person speaking and reassemble his words
getting a different speech.
Warnings:
1. despite the 2.1 this is a first release: there will be bugs ! write to me
the bug you find and I will try to fix it this summer in version 2.2.
2. unlimited Track length means you can not save the Track if you have not
enough disk space.
3. do not keep open other applications when using Mini Recorder 2.1 : if
it happens to crash your system you will not loose documents opened by other
applications.
4. use earphones when dubbing !
5. I did not register at APDA the program creator signature.

Mirage is a 3D modeling and rendering program with a built-in

The Outland PPC tool is a connection tool for the Communications Toolbox. It
uses the Program-to-Program Communications (PPC) manager to communicate over
AppleTalk networks. PPC is the service used to implement program linking and
remote AppleEvents.
PPC is implemented on top of ADSP, so you may wonder why a PPC tool would be
useful since Apple already distributes an ADSP tool. PPC is more efficient when
connecting two ports on the same computer, and more specific in the way remote
ports are selected. It is also possible to create a port that is not visible
across the network, which makes the port initialization much faster and could
provide better security for certain applications. While ADSP may also have
these features, they are not accessible to the user in Apple's tool as far as I
can determine.
You may be freely copy and use this tool for personal, non-commercial
activities. For all other uses, contact Outland.

Notes:
- To connect two ports on the same computer, the application must call CMListen
and CMOpen asynchronously. Otherwise the receiving application never gets time
to accept the call, and the system will hang.
- This release does not report errors to the user. Instead, a debugging file is
produced called "Code Resource Debug". If you report a bug, please include
the contents of this file if it is in the same folder as your CTB application.
- This release does not support multiple sessions through the same port,
timeouts, or any CTB 1.1 functionality.

< Overview >
Prefs Patcher is a small patch for the Newton MessagePad which
corrects what we consider an annoying user interface "feature." Namely,
that you have to click twice to exit the Prefs or Formulas rolls. When
you install Prefs Patcher, it replaces the close box in these rolls with
one that works PROPERLY, requiring only one click to close the roll. You
can still click on the overview button to get back to the overview. The
application also places a dual-function button on the notepad status bar
for one tap access to the Formulas and Prefs rolls.

Subject: (A) My command-Q can't quit application any more
Jeffrey Fritz (jfritz@wvnvm.wvnet.edu) reports that Command-Q no longer quits
his program, and that Command-Q is associated with another command. Well, man,
oh, man, I had this problem last year, and here's what caused it:
If you use the fabulous Now Utilities, you are in possession of a feature
that may have gone unnoticed unless you actually read the manual. If you
click on any item in a menu and hold it (not releasing the mouse button), and
press a key, such as control-Z or, what has happened here, Command-Q, that
key will invoke the menu item forevermore. (Or until you re-select the menu
item and press "delete," which clears the command...) This drove me nuts
because I had defined another command in Microsoft Word as Command-Q, and
you can now reap the benefits of my troubles...
Good luck.

Central Point took over support of Snooper. I too wondered about my

they were dissolving. They told me to contact Central Point (Tech
Support: 503-629-9440, Automated Support: 800-967-6703). When I did,
they told me it might be a few months while all the customer databases
got transferred over to Central Point's system. This was frustrating,
because I kept seeing ads for the "new and improved" 2.0, but couldn't
get my hands on it. Finally, I received the offer for my upgrade, but
it wasn't free anymore. They charged me $14.95+tax+S&H, which is still
a good price. I got it around the first of the year, and happily using
it. Their database should be fully updated by now, so you should be
able to get it in a week or two, compared to the several months that I
waited. Good luck!

The problem was found out to be due to NowMenu setting. NowMenu has a

I follow Melvin Jew and Jeff Taylor's advice. Click on the application

The 720k format is the one used for DOS computers. Data is recorded in a
different way on such a disk.
> Also, would a user who had a diskette formatted here at 720K have a
> problem if they took a disk with that format back to their Mac at home,

Definitely yes, since the DOS format requires that a Mac has
(a) a FDHD floppy drive, which is also sometimes called "SuperDrive",
(b) some software to read data in from a DOS disk, such as AccesPC,
PC Exchange, DosMounter, etc.
It is NOT a problem of system 6 or system 7, but you won't be able to
read those disks on a Mac with only the 800k drive. There is an EXTERNAL
solution for the MacPlus which I know that it works: Kennect Technologies
had a "Drive 2.4 & Rapport" hardware/software solution which attached to
the Plus' disk drive port. But it seems that Kennect does no longer
exists, and I have given away my equipment together with the Plus I owned,
so that I cannot look it up for you. I still remember that they were in
Los Gatos, CA. (But who would buy such a thing today anyway, when Macs
which have a FDHD floppy are that cheap now...)
Best wishes, Christian.

Then you can directly read the MS Word file directly in

It depends (as usual). The folder where the fonts are stored in Sys 7.1
can handle a certain number of items only - don't remember how many, but I
believe it was 127 or 255.
You can combine several fonts into one font file if you use
Font/DA Mover 4.1 - which should be available for free. The older
versions of the Font/DA Mover won't work with System 7. Some of my
colleagues think that Suitcase (from Fifth Generation Software, now
owned by Symantec) is the best font management utility - but I don't
use it, so I can't comment.
> also, if I am looking to increase printing speed, what factors must I
> consider?
I'm no network expert - but if you use many fonts which are not
printer-resident, you spend lot of time for downloading them to your
laser printer. Attach a harddisk to your laser printer and the fonts will
not need to travel over the net which saves time.
If you always use the same (non-resident) fonts, download them manually
when you switch on the printer (this anticipates that your printer has
enough RAM to do this) and they will remain in memory until you reset the
printer or the memory is needed for some other operation.
Hope this helps. Best regards, Christian.

Subject: ARA vs. Timbuktu Pro?
ARA vs. Timbuktu Pro?
I'd like some input to some questions I have about setting up remote
dial-in:
One main topic I'd like to find out about is a comparison of Timbuktu
Pro and Apple Remote Access to provide remote access. Is there any
need to have ARA if I can make a TCP/IP connection to my desktop Mac
with Timbuktu Pro? Are there any features that ARA provides that
Timbuktu Pro does not?
Here's the scenario: Instead of buying a modem for my office computer
and using ARA, I'd like to dial in to a central modem pool using SLIP
and connect to the campus internet and make a TCP/IP connection to my
office Mac using Timbuktu Pro. That way I'd have a "virtual screen" of
my desktop Mac on my PB screen, and be able to manipulate
files/processes as if I were at my desk.
To make this work, I think I need to register the machine IP address
that I wish to connect to with the campus Domain Name Server. Can
anyone verify this? (In other words, can you make a TCP/IP connection
to a Mac with a static MacTCP address *WITHOUT* registering with your
local DNS?)
Other issues I'd like to find out about concerning ARA vs. TP are
security, dial-back authorization, and any other
advantages/disadvantages of choosing one or the other. Any help would
be greatly appreciated.

>thru a modem. A 14,400 baud modem thus sends 14,400 bits per second and

>So. A modem capable of 14,400 baud should transmit a 1 MB file in
>1,048,576 / 1,440 = 728.2 seconds (12 minutes).
And Jeffrey N. Fritz (JFRITZ%WVNVM.BITNET@Forsythe.Stanford.EDU) writes:
>There are eight bits in a byte. So a 100,000 byte file has 800,000 bits.
>At 2400 bps, the file would take:
>
> (100,000*8)/2400 = 333.33 seconds or 5.5 minutes.
They can't both be right! Actually, at these speeds the term 'baud' is
incorrect
and doesn't relate to the throughput of the modem. (It defines the speed of a
serial connection as the number of transitions between logic '1' and logic
'0').
It is more correct to talk of bits-per-second (bps).
A V32.bis modem will throughput 14,400 bps 'in the raw', i.e. the hardware
transmits data at that speed down the phone line. There are various compression
schemes to increase this speed, Anders is correct when he says that a text file
*can* be compressed by the modems to achieve an overall apparent speed of
57,600
bps. *Remember, though, that if the file you're transferring is already
compressed with Stuffit or Compact Pro or the like, the modems' compression
will
not increase the throughput, and may, indeed, slow it down!
So, and this is where we have to rap Jeffery's knuckles, there are (usually)
TEN
bits per byte when we are talking of modem communications, with Macs and other
personal computers, - the eight data bits, one parity bit, and one stop bit. So
the calculation is easy, as Anders wrote in his reply. Simply divide the modem
speed (14,400bps) by ten and you have the throughput in characters-per-second
(1440cps). A typical connection with a 14,400 modem will achieve something like
1480cps on a good line and a compressed file, but remember that system load (at
either end or on the gateways between) will really determine the throughput. I
find that a rough speed calculation is 4Mb per hour, or 1Mb in 15 minutes,
based
on my own experience.

Subject: Conflict (Apple Express Modem CP, QuicKeys and Suitcase)
I have found an troubling conflict on my Quadra 840av.
If I have the Apple Express Modem Control Panel, QuicKeys Toolbox,
Suitcase and MacsBug all running at the same time, my Quadra will
crash just as the Finder is starting up. This is absolutely repeatable.
If these four items are the only ones in the startup sequence, the Mac will
still crash.
The MacsBug message varies, but the problem is always attributed to
the finder. A typical message indicates an illegal instruction or
a system error #28.
Removing any one of the four items, permits the Quadra to boot properly.
Here are the particulars:
Quadra 840av, 24MB RAM, 1 GB HD, running System 7.1
Apple Express Modem Control Panel (version 1.1.4)
QuicKeys Tool Box (version 3.0)
Suitcase (version 2.1.4p1)
MacsBugs (version 6.6.2)
I would appreciate any help in overcoming this problem. I hate to
give up QuicKeys, Suitcase, MacsBug or the GeoPort.

Can you identify yourself with the rumor that most of the

For a now-4000$ Quadra 840AV there simply isn't any room left in
Apple's product line with an entry level Power Macintosh priced
at roughly 2000$, including the V of AV and perhaps 2300$ for
all the AV stuff. (well, ok, there aren't nearly as much
extension options as in a Q840AV, but that doesn't matte that
much) You should see the 68040 chip just in low-end Performas
and LCs.
What do you know/think?

Is there a font file that I overlooked in sumex-aim?
Anything that works under System 6.0.7 and I can add to the System

Colons can't appear in file names because the file system uses them as
delimeters.
There are a few places where they forgot to trap the colon character. For
example, when you record a new sound with the sound cdev, the name you give
it may contain colons. Try dragging that sound out of the System Suitcase,
though, and you'll get a badly phrased error message.

A small cheer for APS: While I'm certain that this company, like all
others, makes mistakes and doesn't always settle complaints to the
customer's satisfaction -- doesn't _always_ do the right thing -- I am
so "high" on APS this week that I wish to put in a good word for them.
I had problems with a 14.4 modem I purchased last summer. _Weird_ problems,
since the modem worked perfectly and consistently from some telephone jacks
but never from others. When I discussed this with the techie and told him
that the modem in another PB worked just fine from these same jacks, he agreed
that it might be a hardware problem. I was still under warranty, but was
dismayed at the idea of a four-day turnaround time for swapping the old modem
for its replacement. So I made a special plea for APS to send me the new
one _before_ receiving the old one, and they agreed! Not only that, but they
covered the expense of Fedex shipment in both directions. Amazing.
I have purchased several things from APS in the past, but wouldn't call
myself a BIG customer. But loyal. Some of my buddies on CIS' MAUG forums
have had similarly good experiences with exceptional service. And very
nice and knowledgeable tech support, as someone pointed out earlier right
here.
I'm certain they are capable of making mistaken judgments, but I sure don't
think that characterizes their way of doing business in general.
Just my 2 cents.

Subject: Info-Mac Digest V12 #29
Dwight,
To transfer files from Win Word 2 to Mac Word 5.x, the best translation is
in many ways the easiest. Don't do anything special at all.
For example, to move a Mac Word file over to Win-doze, put the file on a
DOS floppy disk (using Apple File Exchange for example) and then open the
file in Win Word. Win Word converts the file as it opens. Similarly, you
can take a DOS floppy disk containing Win Word files over to your Mac,
transfer the files to the hard disk, launch Word, and do File/Open to open
and convert the documents.
In either case, you should get a good (often excellent) conversion. Two
things, though, to keep in mind:
- If you are converting graphics, expect more of a good then an excellent
conversion AND do all the converting on the Mac. That is, do save the files
out as Win Word from Mac Word.
- If your fonts are convering willy-nilly, consider setting up a font
mapping file. You can find directions in the Conversion Information
document that got installed with the various bits and pieces of Word. Look
in the folder that also holds the Word Commands folder.
On a related topic, if you are convering from WinWord 6 to Mac Word 5.x,
you must do the converting completely in WinWord 6; though Microsoft plans
to release a converter that you can use with Word 5, the converter is not
yet available.
Oh, and finally, RTF is often a good fallback if you don't know what to do
and you are converting between MS wordprocessor-like programs.
cheers, tonya

No application necessary, just make alaises of the desired applications and
put them in your 'Startup Items' folder inside the system folder. Then rename
the alaises to 'order' the startup sequence. Items in the startup folder are
launched alpahbetically....
As an example:
Orginal names--
Eudora
InterSLIP
Gopher
Program 4
Program 5
Etc...etc...etc
Renamed programs:
1-InterSLIP
2-Eudora
3-Program 4

Yeilds a startup sequence of InterSLIP,Eudora,Program 4,Program 5, Etc..etc

Subject: LPI/DPI and color separations
You must remember than DPI refers to the resolution of the output
device (printer). LPI refers to the size of the halftone dot.
The printer dots make up a collection (matrix) of dots that
make the halftone dot. Thats why LPI is less than DPI.
The interesting thing is that the big problem in outputting
first-rate color separations is related to this issue. In
order to do color on a press, the 4 colors are output at
different angles. If the angles are inprecise, the output
will look terrible.
In order to output at these angles, the halftone dot (measured in
LPI) must be rotated. Because a matrix is rotated on a matrix, the
dots will not overlap correctly. Therefore, the exact angles the
printers want can not be output unless you have 3000+ DPI and even
that is not exact enough for some things. The limitation is on the
power of the imagesetter.
THE FUTURE. Once the imagesetters get more powerfull, perhaps the
PPC microprocessor will do the trick, more dots can be drawn so that
the halftone dots can be drawn at the appropriate angles.
So, if someone says the "desktop" (i.e., a Mac) can't do high-end
color separations and for that you need a Scitex, feel free to
correct them and point out that the output device is at fault.
If Scitex equipment will easily accept Mac files, Macs will be able to
do high end separations. Scitex is not too motivated to do so because
no one would use their "front-end" equipment if they could output
to a Scitex from a Mac. (Scitex is talking about doing this, though).
In short, I don't know what the LPI of the laser printer in question
is. However, to get the answer, use Adobe Separator and use the PPD
>From that printer. It will list all the available LPI screen
resolutions in a pop-up menu.-Pete Tamas

I've had bad luck getting a RAM disk to do anything useful. It goes (I

Another possibility. Do you use NowMenus? That utility allows you to assign
command keys to menu items on the fly. If that's it, you should be able to
see the Command-Q on the applications menu. Simply select that item and hit
the delete (backspace) key. The Command-Q should go away and you should be

I am posting this question for a friend. Please respond directly to the E-mail
address listed below. He will summarise to the net if there is sufficient
interest.
Question follows...
I have a Mac LC III and use 'Remote Access' to connect to a server via modem.
I finally got Remote Access working properly on my machine by copying it from
another machine (even though it was installed using the same original source
disks as the ones I was using). Since that was functioning nicely I thought it
was time to install MS-Mail..... shutdown....restart....and now Remote Access
doesn't work again! A dialogue box comes up saying something to the effect of
'Unable to connect. Unidentified error of type -5541(?) has occurred.'
Thinking that the only thing that had changed was addition of MS-Mail 3.1 I
removed mail and tried again with the same result. I think the problem may be
a bug in Remote Access because the modem doesn't even begin doing anything
before the error appears. Has anyone else had similar experiences or heard of
problems with Remote Access? How can I fix it?

to have LaserWriter8 default to the 250-sheet tray setting. We would like it to
default to the 500-sheet tray setting instead.
I have a bit of experience with ResEdit and am not afraid to try fiddling a
copy
of LaserWriter8 until I get what I want, but I have no idea where to look for
the proper resource to edit. Can someone provide me with a starting point:

Ok, I have read everything I could find and It all talks about LPI and

scan is 1bit or 8bit.

Darn, I wish people would tell us that they're submitting a Hypercard

Brains is not a "program" it's a hypercard stack . . . oh well.
If hypercard versions were all compatible, it didn't take so much memory,
and it didn't save changes into the stack, I might use tools like Scatter
Brains or Helical . . . but as it is, they're too likely to crash and take
too much space in RAM and on HD to be at all useful.

Subject: (Q) Images to Word?
I am using an image processing software (KHOROS) that is capable of producing
the following output formats:
BIG, FITS, PBM, Sun Raster, raw binary, X11 bitmap (xbm), TIFF (verbose,
boolean, compressed -> LZW, CCITTFAX3, CCITTRLEW, PACKBITS).
I want to bring the images into MacDraw or Word. I have tried several of the
TIFF formats but none of them worked. Is it possible to get MacDraw or Word to
read any of these formats?
I have also tried sending a Postscript file of an image to a LaserWriter using
the LaserWriter Utility. I have not had any luck. Is there another way to do
this?
-thanks

As I know all too well from experience, the 660av and (presumably) the 840av
REQUIRE "non-composite" memory. If you have added memory to this Mac, that is
probably the problem.
When you install "composite" memory SIMMs in these Macs, you get all sorts of
problems. One of the symptoms I had was a complete inability to format 800K
floppies, even tho I could format HD floppies just fine. When I switched to
non-composite memory the problems went away.
How to tell: look at the SIMMs you installed; count the number of chips on the
SIMM; if it is 32 chips for a 16MB SIMM, that is composite; if it is 8 chips,
that is non-composite. It makes lots of difference to an AV mac.

The more likely explanation in my mind is that they purchased the rights to
market the code from someone or some company and they haven't a clue how to
make changes to it or maybe they don't have the rights to make changes to
it. There seem to be quite a few marketing companies around these days that
do an excellent (maybe too excellent) job of selling software and hardware
that is acquired from others.

I had exactly the same problem with my PB140. I seem to remember that
some old version of BeHierarchic locked a resource in the System or
Finder. I assume that causes the trouble.
As I don't know which resource is locked, my brute force solution was
to back up the HD and reformat. After that installation worked.
BTW, does the commercial BeHierarchic 2.0 still cause this problem?
Or which shareware alternatives are there to get hierarchical menus?

"On Macintosh computers with a 68040 microprocessor (Quadra, Centris,

the computer to freeze when you attempt to open them over the network.
This problem is fixed by using the Network Launch Fix available from

I was not able to locate this patch/fix on ftp.apple.com. Has anybody

Subject: Word's Equation Editor
Alun,
Seeing as I do support Mac Word, I wanted to comment that a crash upon
inserting an equation is pretty rare, and whether you have MTExtra
installed shouldn't have much impact on whether you crash or not (why I was
in the Equation Editor just yesterday without MTExtra installed, and even
on a Centris 650 running 7.1...).
Unfortunately, not being a programmer, I haven't a clue what MacsBug is
talking about. My angle to "looking into the problem" would be to bounce it
right back on you with the usual tech support person questions - inits off?
rebuild desktop? word settings? bad embedding prefs file? ... the usual
routine, trying to determine what's different about your situation that
could be corrected.
cheers, tonya
